The FOX 5 Weather Team continues to monitor the potential of a winter weather event on Tuesday.

There are only five days until the official start of winter, but Mother Nature decided to celebrate a little early this year with a winter storm that impacted a large portion of the D.C. region Wednesday.

The beauty with any winter storm is always in the details, and the details with this upcoming winter storm are pretty messy.

Frederick County could see more than half a foot of snow and as a precaution, the city of Frederick declared a snow emergency Tuesday evening closing all city offices and non-essential operations. County schools are all virtual.

It seems like it has been quite some time since D.C. has had to deal with a decent winter storm. In reality, it has been about 2 years.

You can now add snow removal to the long list of things that have had to change because of COVID-19.

Some of the first snowflakes of the season were spotted falling in far western Maryland Tuesday morning.

Students who typically wear their pajamas inside out in hopes of the coveted snow day may be disappointed after the threat of the pandemic ends.

After the month of January closed on a rather dry and uneventful note, the first week of February has brought a considerably more active pattern with showers having threatened the D.C. region over the past couple of days. A much stronger storm system approaches the region on Thursday however, and with it comes the risk for some steadier and heavier rains particularly on Thursday night.

Four years ago today, the District was mired in nearly 18 inches of snow – making it the fourth largest total in the area’s history.

Bundle up as you head out the door Tuesday morning! Temperatures range from the upper teens to low 20s under sunny skies.

The 'real feel' of January kicks in Friday with very cold air settling in. FOX 5's Gwen Tolbart says expect plenty of sunshine but bundle up! Don't be fooled as cold gusty Northwest winds of 10 to 15mph (gusts up to 25mph) will provide morning wind chills in the teens.

Despite one minor snow event back on January 7th, winter has so far been pretty kind to us. In fact, since the winter solstice back on December 21st, D.C. has only had one single day where temperatures have failed to hit the 40° mark. Temperatures have exceeded 50 degrees on twenty of the past twenty-seven days, with four of those days above 60 degrees, and two above 70 degrees. The winter started with a winter break of sorts so to speak, but we are in for a little reality check later on Thursday evening, as winter cold finally returns to the D.C. region.
