Man accused of killing National Guard member in DC makes first court appearance
The man accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., killing one of them, made his first court appearance. A judge granted prosecutors’ request to keep the suspect behind bars as they prepare for a detention hearing. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing and is being represented by a public defender. He is scheduled to return to court on January 15.

Car goes airborne, crashes into backyard pool | Driver lands in water
Police in southern Nevada say a woman was speeding moments before a dramatic crash that sent her car airborne into a backyard. Video shows the vehicle crashing through a fence and landing in a pool, ejecting the driver in the process. Authorities say the woman was able to get out of the pool with some assistance. A tow truck and a crane were later used to remove the vehicle from the property. The homeowner estimates the damage could cost about $300,000 to repair. It is unclear what charges, if any, the driver may face as the investigation continues.

A 22-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge after police say he killed his mother inside their home in Laurel late Saturday night. The Prince George’s County Police Department says officers responded around 11:50 p.m. on Dec. 27, to the 8100 block of Gorman Avenue in an unincorporated section of Laurel for a welfare check. Inside the home, officers found a woman suffering from trauma. Despite life-saving efforts, police say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect charged in connection with the Jan. 6 pipe bomb investigation is due in federal court Tuesday, as his attorneys argue he should be released while the case moves forward. According to a motion filed overnight, defense attorneys for 30-year-old Brian J. Cole Jr. are asking for his release ahead of trial. The filing also claims there was "government-induced excitement" surrounding his arrest.

Lawmakers reached a temporary agreement last month to fund the government through January 30, but another shutdown could be looming if Congress cannot reach a new spending deal. At the center of the debate are Affordable Care Act subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year. Democrats previously conceded on the issue, but it remains unclear whether they will push to include the subsidies in upcoming spending negotiations. Lawmakers are expected to vote as talks continue on Capitol Hill.

Authorities say 37-year-old Christian Delgado was arrested Friday after the girl, Winter Wagoner, was found living at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Wagoner was reported missing from her foster home in Kentucky earlier this year. FOX 5 spoke with relatives of the accused, who claim Wagoner presented herself as being 18 years old. The investigation remains ongoing.
