Showers and possibly a thunderstorm Tuesday as the Washington, D.C. region cleans up from a round of severe weather that swept through the area Monday night.

Another round of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm, expected across the Washington, D.C., region Tuesday.

After one of the busiest, most violent severe weather days of the year, the D.C. area is moving into a calmer "in-between" period. While today's storms triggered widespread wind damage and multiple tornado warnings south and east of I-95, a cooler air mass has moved in to eat up the atmospheric energy. 

A fast-moving severe storm packing torrential rain, intense wind gusts and hail left behind a trail of destruction in a Burke, Virginia townhome neighborhood off Guinea Road. The powerful winds snapped trees in half, shattered windows, tore insulation from structures and sent trees crashing onto multiple homes—collapsing roofs and destroying chimneys. 

Strong thunderstorms moved across the Washington, DC region Monday evening, prompting severe weather warnings and brief tornado concerns in parts of Southern Maryland. Heavy rain, damaging winds and additional showers are expected through Tuesday morning before drier and more pleasant weather returns later in the day.
