After winter blast of snow and ice, refreeze concerns overnight

WASHINGTON - A powerful nor'easter brought the D.C. region its heaviest snow of the season.

Snow began falling late Monday night and by the early morning hours on Tuesday, with much of the area along the Interstate 95 corridor receiving about an inch on the ground. A heavy rain/snow mix followed the snow and brought icy and slippery conditions to D.C. area highways and side streets.

Many school districts in Maryland and Virginia either closed or delayed their opening times on Tuesday. District of Columbia Public Schools held class but opened two hours late. D.C. area federal offices announced a 3-hour delayed arrival for non-emergency employees.

On Tuesday night, several school districts around the region have announced their operating status for Wednesday. Here are some of the closings and delays:

Closed on Wednesday:
- Prince William
- Manassas City
- Fauquier

Opening on a 2-hour delay:
- D.C.
- Anne Arundel
- Charles
- Culpeper
- Frederick
- Fairfax
- Loudoun
- Montgomery
- Prince George's

While the D.C. and Baltimore areas were hit hard with freezing rain in the morning hours, northern portions of Frederick County and Carroll County in Maryland received mostly heavy snow. Some of the snow totals from around the region:

Here are the snow totals at D.C. area airports. Dulles International Airport set a daily new record for snowfall on Tuesday.

The majority of the snow has ended with some snow showers and squalls persisting into Tuesday evening. The major concern going into Wednesday is the strong overnight wind gusts, single-digit wind chills and low temperatures in the 10s and 20s that will cause the snow that fell to refreeze. Icy conditions may be the cause of school delays and closings on Wednesday. Expect a chilly day on Wednesday with strong wind gusts and flurries.

The Metrorail system opened at 5 a.m. with service above and below ground on Tuesday. Metro said regular weekday rail service is expected for Wednesday. However, Metrobus service will start on a moderate snow service plan. MetroAccess service will resume on Wednesday morning.

The heavy, wet snow caused issues in Prince George's County, where a downed snow-covered tree near Queen Elizabeth Drive and Rhodenda Place blocked residents from leaving their Upper Marlboro neighborhood. In Gaithersburg, a truck downed a street pole near Clopper Road and Firstfield Road. The intersection was reopened Tuesday evening.

Numerous power outages were reported in the metro area and about 5,400 flights were canceled at area airports.

The storm brought about 1 to 2 feet of snow to other cities in the northeast including New York, Philadelphia and Boston.
