TV One's 'When Love Kills' Niatia Kirkland and Tasha Smith on Good Day DC

"When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story" star Niatia Kirkland and director Tasha Smith were on Good Day DC Tuesday morning to talk about TV One's new movie based off a true story.

The film sends an important message about giving adolescents the attention they need to keep them from venturing to the streets in search of validation.

Director Tasha Smith wanted the film to accurately reflect situations in which young women may find themselves where it is difficult to escape domestic violence.

"When you you think about women that are dealing with domestic violence, they begin thinking it's their fault and that they have to constantly work to get the love of a man so they won't get abused." Smith continued, "I felt like in order for people to really see, believe, and be affected, it needed to be real, it needed to be honest, it needed to be grounded."

The film premieres on Monday, August 28 on TV One at 9 p.m.
