Illinois mom's cellphone photo leads to son's cancer diagnosis

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- An Illinois mother is crediting a photograph she took of her 2-year-old son on her cellphone for helping to detect his cancer.

In the photo, the mom noticed her son's left pupil appeared white in color.

She took her son, Avery Fitzgerald, to a specialist and showed the doctor the photo.

The doctor discovered 75 percent of his eye was covered in tumors and say it's likely he was blind in that eye his entire life.

They say the tumors only recently began to form.

Doctors performed surgery to remove the unhealthy eye.

They say he will eventually get a prosthetic one.
