Get home safe: Free Halloween cab rides in DC this weekend

WASHINGTON - In an effort to make the roadways a little less frightening this Halloween weekend, free cab rides are being offered to drivers in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas on the evening of Saturday, October 29.

The rides will be offered by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP). The 2016 Halloween SoberRide® program will be in operation at 10:00 pm on Saturday, October 29 and operate until 6:00 am on Sunday, October 30.

"The scary fact is that over half (52 percent) of all U.S. traffic deaths during Halloween involve drunk drivers," said Kurt Gregory Erickson, WRAP's President.

On Halloween last year, 412 people in the D.C. area used the service. The charity also offers its SoberRide® program on St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day and for the winter holidays. This year, rides will be offered starting on December 16 and through New Year's Eve.

During the eight-hour period on Saturday, people ages 21 and older celebrating with alcohol may call the toll-free SoberRide® phone number 1-800-200-TAXI (8294) and be afforded a no-cost (up to a $30 fare), safe way home. AT&T wireless customers can dial #WRAP for the same service.
