Cheers to the Weekend: The Boozy Banana Milkshake

It's that time of the week when we say "Cheers to the weekend!" Every Friday night, we invite a different local bartender or mixologist in to share their signature recipe.

Thomas Marr, part owner and chef at Olivia's Diner in Dupont Circle joined us to mix up the Boozy Banana Milkshake.

Cocktail: The Boozy Milkshake

Recipe:

12 scoops ice cream, vanilla
1/4 cup light rum
1/4 cup dark rum
1/4 cup Kahlua coffee liqueur
3 ripe bananas

Method

In a blender, combine ice cream, light rum, dark rum and bananas. Blend on low speed until ingredients start to combine. Blend on high speed for 15-20 seconds or until the banana has been pureed.

While the milkshake is blending pour the kahlua equally into 3 glasses.

Pour the milkshake into each glass.

Garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherry, if desired.

Note: the kahlua can be substituted with another liqueur if desired. Frangelica (hazelnut) or nocino (walnut) would be excellent substitutions.

Chef's secret: ripe bananas are best for flavor and even overripe bananas are better. The next time you have bananas that are turning black allow them to keep ripening until completely black then just pop them in a plastic bag and put them in your freezer until ready to use. You could also go one step further and puree the bananas and store in container in the freezer but leaving them whole would be easiest.
