Commanders Championship weather: What to expect in DC and Philly

As the old adage goes, history loves to repeat itself. This may sound familiar to some: A football team from Washington defeats the Detroit Lions, with a date with the Buffalo Bills as their opponent to determine the Super Bowl victor? That was the story of the 1991 Washington Redskins, who went on to be Super Bowl champions as well.

It's a very similar fate to what may be awaiting your Washington Commanders, though the only difference is that the date with potentially Buffalo, or the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, depends on the outcome of a game in Philadelphia this weekend.

Last weekend, football fans watched as Philadelphia beat the Los Angeles Rams in a game where the cold and snow played a role. Will the Commanders face similar conditions this weekend?

Travel conditions

With no traffic taken into consideration, it is about a little over a two-and-half hour drive between the Commander's home of Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Still a journey, but a much more manageable one compared to last weekend's opponent Detroit Lions, whose home stadium of Ford Field is about an eight-hour drive from D.C. Unlike last weekend, though, where parts of our region were under winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings, travel weather this time around should not be much of a problem — as you can stand the cold temperatures, that is!

If you are traveling up on Saturday afternoon or evening, expect partly cloudy skies with just a few passing clouds. Temperatures should be in the 30s for just about all of your journey, but nothing falling from the sky should slow you down! About as good as travel weather can get in late January.

Tailgate conditions

It would not be a true Commanders game without a Commander's tailgate, right?! For the fans that plan on starting up festivities earlier in the day, expect temperatures to start off in the upper 20s in Philly on Sunday morning, then steadily rising into the 30s and lower 40s by the afternoon hours.

There may be some limited sunshine in the early morning hours, but a feature known as a surface trough will be passing through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

While this will be a weak feature and is not expected to bring any sort of rain or snow to the region, it will put more clouds in the sky compared to Saturday. Still, no indications that you'll need the umbrella for the tailgate at this time, and that is a great thing! Just bring an extra layer or two to stay warm!
