1991 High Heel Race: Police accused of using excessive force
On Halloween night in 1991, the now-iconic High Heel Race along 17th Street Street was not supposed to take place after permits were turned down. But members of the gay community gathered to hold the race anyway -- prompting the arrests of six men. D.C. police was accused of using excessive force in the arrests, and an investigation followed. D.C. Mayor Sharon Pratt apologized following the incident.

January 1993: Gay rights activists pressure DC to repeal sodomy law
Frank Kameny and other gay rights activists in D.C. pressured the Council to repeal a law that forbid sodomy between consenting adults. The law was repealed in April of 1993.
June 1994: DC Gay Pride Parade
Unity, community and pride was the focus of the Gay Pride Parade in Northwest DC on June 5, 1994.
June 1997: Thousands bike from North Carolina to DC in AIDS Ride
2,000 riders biked from Raleigh to D.C. in 1997 to raise money for Food & Friends and the Whitman-Walker Clinic.
November 1997: 'Walk Without Fear' rally against hate crimes
On a rainy day in 1997, over a hundred people gathered in Dupont Circle to march against hate crimes committed against gay and trans people.
June 1998: 150,000 attend DC Pride
Tens of thousands gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. for the Capital Pride Festival on June 7, 1998.
October 1998: Marion Barry recognized for contributions to DC gay community
In October of 1998, DC Mayor Marion Barry was retiring from his second stint in office. Founder of the D.C. gay rights movement Frank Kameny spoke at a tribute for Barry -- focusing on Barry's support for gay rights throughout his political career.
