Suspect who stole officer's gun at DC Safeway arrested, police say

A man accused of stealing a gun from a special police officer patrolling a Northeast D.C. grocery store has been taken into custody, according to officials.

The Metropolitan Police Department said 34-year-old Jahil Dailey was arrested on Wednesday.

Investigators said the theft happened at the Safeway located in the 1600 block of Maryland Avenue and occurred just as police and community leaders were finishing a safety walk a few blocks away in response to recent gun violence.

Authorities said the officer attempted to stop Dailey from stealing items from the store and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, officials said the officer's gun fell out of the holster and the suspect grabbed the firearm and ran away.

Dailey has been charged with assault on a police officer, carrying a pistol without a license, and two counts of theft.
