Small dog burned in DC fire on the mend, sporting pink casts
WASHINGTON - A dog seriously burned during an apartment building fire that displaced a dozen people earlier this week in the Logan Circle neighborhood of Washington D.C. is now recovering with its owner.
Lucy, an 11-year-old Rat terrier, was injured while fleeing the fire in the 1300 block of 12th Street in Northwest D.C. Tuesday afternoon.
A D.C. police officer is being credited for helping save Lucy from further injury after seeing the small dog running in and out of traffic on the streets after escaping the fire.
Officer Douglas Berlin chased Lucy for several blocks before he was able to catch up to her to make sure she was safe. After being secured by the officer, a paramedic at the scene transported Lucy to a veterinary clinic to get her treated for her serious burns. Animal rescue officials said Lucy has been reunited with her owner and is now wearing pink casts for her injuries.
Officer Berlin was honored Wednesday by the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League for his actions.
The fire damaged eight units and an adjacent home, causing at least 12 people to be displaced. No residents were injured, but two firefighters suffered heat-related injuries while a third firefighter twisted an ankle while battling the fire.
