Md. woman dies after receiving butt-enlargement injection from unlicensed doctor

Police say a Maryland woman died during an illegal procedure performed in the basement of a New York home to enlarge her buttocks.

Kelly Mayhew, of Suitland, Maryland, traveled with her mother reportedly to a home in Queens for the buttock injection, but after having the cosmetic procedure, the 34-year-old started having trouble breathing. Her mother tried to perform CPR while the person who gave her the injections ran from the house and took off in a gray SUV.

Mayhew was brought to a hospital by EMS technicians where she was pronounced dead.

A medical examiner are investigating to determine the exact cause of death.

Mayhew worked at BET and the company released this statement: "We are saddened by death of our colleague and friend Kelly Mayhew. Our hearts go out to her family. We extend our deepest sympathies for their loss."

Dr. Paul Ruff, a Maryland plastic surgeon who performs various versions of buttocks enlargement procedures, said altering your body in any way requires expert training for your own safety.

"Sadly, we hear about stories about people going into hotel rooms or houses and having things like caulk, non-medical grade silicone, oils injected," he said. "These have dire consequences and people can die from these things."

At this point, police say this is not a homicide investigation until they get a cause of death from the medical examiner.

Police are still searching for the suspect who injected Mayhew.
