Maryland doctor accused of defrauding insurance companies more than $850,000
BOWIE, Md. - Federal prosecutors say Dr. Sampson Sarpong submitted fraudulent insurance claims based on medically unnecessary procedures in some instances to the tune of more than $850,000.
The details of the alleged scheme were included in a grand jury indictment unsealed on Monday upon Dr. Sarpong's arrest. The indictment alleges that Sarpong, between 2011 and March 2017, submitted false insurance claims, conducted medical procedures like allergy tests that were unnecessary and illegally used patients' identities.
Records from the Maryland Board of Physicians indicates that Dr. Sarpong had his medical license revoked in August 2017. The records indicate Sarpong was found guilty before the board of unprofessional conduct, grossly overutilized health services and failure to keep adequate medical records. He still has his practice listed online on several doctor review and appointment websites.
The FBI told FOX 5 that Sarpong is being held without bond until a detention hearing on Wednesday in U.S. District Court. The indictment says the government plans to reclaim the money prosecutors say Sarpong stole.
