DC city vehicle crashes in front of Warner Theatre

A city vehicle crashed into the entrance area of the Warner Theatre in Northwest D.C. Thursday evening.

The accident happened at around 6:17 p.m. at the venue located in the 500 block of 13th Street. The D.C. Department of Public Works van jumped the curb, hit a parking sign and slammed into the steps in front of the theater.

A woman was hit during the incident and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.

A witness told FOX 5 that the van appeared to be unattended and rolled down the street when the collision happened.

"I heard the vehicle jump the curb, it made a noise and then 'Bam!' -- all hell broke loose," a male witness said. "I looked over and there was nobody driving the thing. It just happened and everybody was looking for the driver and there was no driver, and this poor young lady got hit."

"She was conscious," said Janet Galope, another witness in the area. "We couldn't really get close because the security here was asking people to step away. They were saying please get back because there was nobody in the car, who knows what's going on. So they just told us to get back."

The theater is holding performances of "The Nutracker" by The Washington Ballet this month.
