Baby girl dies after dental procedure in North Austin

Tuesday, a 14-month-old girl died after getting dental work done in North Austin.

The child was taken by ambulance from Austin Children's Dentistry on Hymeadow Drive to the North Austin Medical Center. Just before noon doctors at the hospital pronounced the girl dead.

The Travis County Medical Examiner has performed an autopsy on Daisy Lynn Torres' body, but the results are still pending. It is unknown whether the girl had any prior existing medical conditions.

The medical examiner said Torres was having dental work done at Austin Children's Dentistry Tuesday morning when something went wrong.

"What I can tell you is there was a child a patient that was transported yesterday morning," said Sarah Marshall, spokesperson for Austin Children's Dentistry.

Torres was taken to North Austin Medical Center, but she did not survive.

"We learned several hours later that the child had passed," said Marshall.

According to a youcaring.com page set up for the family, Torres went in for a routine cavity filling and was put under anesthesia at the dentist's recommendation. That's when Torres stopped breathing.

"Anytime there's a loss of a life it's a tragedy and certainly the loss of a young child. And the staff, their thoughts and prayers, the concern is for the family at this point," Marshall said.

The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners has opened an investigation into Torres' death. They are unable to comment until there is action taken by the board.

Austin Children's Dentistry has been open since 1974 and records show none of their dentists have any disciplinary action filed against them. They work specifically with children and said all their dentists and anesthesiologists are accredited.

The International Association of Paediatric Dentistry says 1 in 10 children will experience tooth decay before their second birthday.
