Arrest made in case of DC home burglarized 11 times

WASHINGTON - One day after we brought you a FOX 5 exclusive about a Southeast D.C. man whose home was burglarized eleven times over the last few years, there is a break in the case.

Police say one person has been arrested in connection to the series of burglaries.

D.C. police responded to our story Tuesday night by saying that in at least one of the cases, proper protocol was not followed.

On Wednesday, a detective responded to Kehinde Taiwo's home and examined surveillance video that was recorded from the home. The pictures are clear and show three suspects inside his home.

Taiwo said his home has been burglarized eleven times in the last three years and he has done everything to protect his home, even giving police these surveillance images in hopes there would be an arrest.

Taiwo said to add to his frustrations, when he showed up at the Seventh District police station asking for help, he was told there was no record of any prior burglary at his home.

The D.C. Police Union said there is a possibility Taiwo's records were lost recently as there was just a migration of information into a new records database.

The union also said this case brings attention to the shortage of police officers in the department.

"The question is how many people are available when you call the police to come and answer that call," said Delroy Burton, president of the D.C. Police Union. "That goes to the question with staffing in investigative units like the Seventh District Detectives Office. How many cases are those burglary detectives sharing? And burglary is one of the most difficult cases to close. It has one of the lowest percentages of closures of all the index crimes that the FBI tracks."
