Wet mix makes for messy Tuesday morning commute

Remember last Tuesday when it was sunny and bright with spring-like temperatures in the 70s? Yeah -- neither do we!

Many across the D.C. region woke to wet and icy conditions today which brought delays to some schools around the region and created slick driving conditions for the early morning commute. Regions to the north and west of D.C. were dealing with a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and even a little snow in some areas Tuesday morning.

With temperatures right around freezing most treated roadways should be OK but side streets could be icy, says FOX 5's Mike Thomas. The icy road conditions led to hundreds of crashes in Maryland overnight into Tuesday morning. Maryland State Police say 226 crashes were reported. Dozens of vehilces were left unattended and over 100 calls for service were made. In Montgomery County, emergency crews were busy responding to downed wires and trees.

Rain will continue for most of the day, afternoon and into the evening, Thomas say. It looks like conditions will clear on Wednesday and Valentine's Day which looks great!

Thomas say a winter system moving our direction this weekend has the possibility of bringing with it some accumulating snow.
