Water main break shuts down Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda

A major water main break shut down a busy stretch of Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda on Tuesday, prompting traffic disruptions, roadway damage and overnight repair work, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) officials.

What we know:

Crews responded to Bradley Boulevard at Arlington Road, where a broken 20-inch water main caused flooding and significant damage to the roadway.

Officials said the intersection of Bradley Boulevard and Arlington Road has since reopened, but Bradley Boulevard remains closed between Arlington Road and Leland Street as repairs continue.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Officials said the broken main is located about 10 feet underground. WSSC Water crews shut off the water and began repairs after the flow was stopped, allowing work to move forward.

SkyFOX footage showed water gushing across the roadway, briefly turning the 5000 block of Bradley Boulevard into what appeared to be a fast-moving stream.

After the water receded, crews were left with significant roadway damage described as resembling "moon craters" by officials.

Police directed traffic during the evening rush hour while crews excavated sections of the road to reach the damaged main.

Officials said nearby businesses, including a Safeway, saw reduced customer traffic due to the partial shutdown and limited access along the corridor.

No injuries were reported.

What we don't know:

Officials have not said what caused the water main break.

What's next:

Crews will work overnight to assess the extent of the damage, determine necessary repairs and estimate how long it will take to fully reopen the roadway, according to officials.
