VDOT worker changing flat tire, two other drivers injured in collision on I-66

CENTREVILLE, Va. - A Virginia Department of Transportation worker attempting to change a flat tire and two other motorists are recovering at the hospital after a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County.

The accident happened at 12:33 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-66 in Centreville.

Virginia State Police said VDOT sent one of their Safety Services Patrol workers out to help the driver of a disabled Nissan Rogue that was pulling a trailer with a flat tire.

Police said as the worker was finishing up changing the tire, a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado truck ran off the road and struck the worker's vehicle parked behind the Nissan vehicle. The impact of the crash caused the VDOT worker's vehicle to hit the worker and the male Nissan driver.

The VDOT worker was transported to Fairfax Inova Hospital while the driver of the Nissan was transported to Fair Oaks Hospital.

The driver of the Chevy pickup truck, identified as 35-year-old Seth Ferrell of West Virginia, was also transported to Fair Oaks Hospital.

They all suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Ferrell was charged with reckless driving and for failing to yield to emergency/safety vehicles. Police believe fatigue was a factor in the crash.
