Survey: DC is the most 'under-vacationed' city in America
WASHINGTON - Despite Americans taking more vacation over the past two years, 54 percent of workers in the United States did not use all of their vacation time in 2016. According to a new report, the city with workers that had the most unused amount of vacation was Washington D.C.
Project: Time Off, a nonprofit group based out of the District, conducted a survey of more than 7,300 workers who are over 18 years old, work more than 35 hours a week and receive paid time off from their employers.
The group found that 64 percent of D.C.-area workers left vacation days on the table. According to the study, one of the major factors for this is Washington D.C. being a hotbed for government workers.
"The nation's capital is home to far more government workers than average (40% to 13%), and government workers are more likely to leave vacation time unused," the report said. "With 63 percent of government workers leaving time on the table, it is the second-worst industry at using time off, just after education (65%)."
The study also noted that government workers have more generous vacation rollover policies than the average worker.
Following Washington D.C. with the most unused vacation are San Francisco, Tampa, Los Angeles and Boston. The states that used the most unused vacation are:
1. Idaho
2. New Hampshire
3. Alaska
4. South Dakota
5. Oklahoma
The cities that used the most amount of vacation are Pittsburgh, Chicago, Phoenix, Orlando and Miami. For the states, these are the most vacationed states:
1. Maine
2. Hawaii
3. Arizona
4. Alabama
5. Wisconsin
