Some Montgomery County parents fear new boundaries for school communities

The possibility of changing school boundaries is fueling a firestorm among some parents in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County is known for its top schools - and some families purchase homes based on the school they want their child to attend.

But now that all could be changing.

Officials in the district say parents are "jumping the gun" - noting that no boundaries have changed yet.

The district is requesting proposals for an outside consultant to come and review its boundaries and clusters.

The median home value by cluster for Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda is reportedly nearly $1 million.

For Churchill, the median is around $900,000 - and Bethesda-Chevy Chase average home price is around $830,000.

For Montgomery County families, the quality of education and property values are potentially on the line if an outside consultant says boundaries are drawn ineffectively, there's unequal dispersal of resources, or unequal access to resources within the school building.

So far we're told there have been community meetings, online feedback forms, hundreds of parents speaking up and yet still no concrete idea when anything -- if anything -- could take effect.
