Snowy mess Friday morning caused major traffic problems; soaking rain expected into the evening

Many parts of the D.C. region woke up to a wintry mess as a fast moving system that arrived overnight and brought snow, sleet and rain to the area. Dozens of schools closed or delayed their opening times and slippery conditions on the roadways slowed the early morning commute.

The weather played a part in a deadly crash in Prince George's County that caused major backups in the College Park area for much of the morning. The crash involving a tractor trailer and an SUV was reported around 3:50 a.m. along the Outer Loop of Interstate 495 at Route 1. All lanes of the Outer Loop were closed for several hours. The person killed has not yet been identified.

The D.C. area along the Interstate-95 corridor could see between two inches of snow by the time the system moves out Friday. Areas to the north and west of the city may get between two to four inches. Parts of the region to the south and east of D.C. will likely receive less than an inch.

Friday's snow will not last all day. After the quick moving system moves out of the area during the later morning hours a rain system will make for a wet evening. Expect rain well into the night on Friday. Cold temperatures remain with us into the afternoon and evening with highs near 40 degrees.

Saturday morning will be soggy with a mix of clouds and sun and scattered showers expected.

The next winter system to watch will move into the D.C. region Sunday and carry over into Monday morning. The system looks like it will start as a brief wintry mix or snow event sometime Sunday afternoon. There will be a switch to all rain sometime Sunday evening and that wet weather will continue into Monday. It's still early and the forecast could still shift in either direct with more rain or snow.

After Monday, the first full week of March looks very cold and windy with temperatures in the 30s. In like a lion!
