Sen. Harry Reid to undergo additional surgery on right eye

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid will undergo additional surgery Wednesday as doctors try to restore vision in his right eye.

Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman said in a statement Monday night that he will have follow-up surgery at George Washington University Hospital in Washington. She said the surgery is a necessary step to help him recover full vision in his right eye.

Reid is expected to miss the remainder of the week in the Senate. Lawmakers are on recess next week.

Reid suffered broken ribs and damage to his eye when he was injured in an exercise accident at his Nevada home on New Year's Day.

The 75-year-old senator has already undergone surgery on his eye since the accident. The Democratic leader is up for re-election in 2016.
