Property left at Metro's L'Enfant Plaza being returned

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Metro says riders who left property behind when evacuating the L'Enfant Plaza station earlier this week following an electrical malfunction should be able to reclaim their belongings.

Metro says that starting late Wednesday afternoon, riders' property will be available at Metro's downtown headquarters.

Metro says passengers who need to reclaim their property should call customer service at (202) 637-7000. Metro says it will make alternate arrangements to return property to any rider for whom traveling to downtown poses a hardship.

The L'Enfant Plaza station was evacuated Monday afternoon after electrical malfunction involving the high-voltage third rail led a train to stop in a tunnel and quickly filled the tunnel with smoke. The six-car, Virginia-bound, yellow line train had just left the L'Enfant Plaza station when the malfunction occurred.
