Police identify young girl brought to hospital

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Montgomery County police said they have identified a toddler who was brought to a Silver Spring hospital by a woman who told authorities the girl was dropped off at her home.

The woman who dropped off the child said her sister asked her to care for the little girl on Saturday. The following day, when she couldn't reach her sister, the woman decided to bring the unknown Jane Doe to Holy Cross Hospital. She told medical personnel she did not know the child's name or who her parents were.

"[The girl] is at the hospital for medical treatment," said Montgomery County Police Cpl. Rebecca Innocenti. "Because of the ongoing investigation, I can't comment further on why she may be at the hospital."

The first information that came out about the unidentified toddler came from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which released a photo of the child and information that she had sustained an injury to her lower body.

By late Tuesday morning, police said investigators located the girl's relatives.

"Right now, the detectives are working to determine guardianship," said Innocenti. "Also working to determine circumstances surrounding how she may have ended up at that woman's house. Also working to ensure that this child is in the hands of someone who is keeping her safe."

Police said the girl remains at the hospital Tuesday evening undergoing medical treatment.
