Mourners gather at funeral to remember man stabbed to death on Metro train

MONROE, Conn. (AP) -- The father of a southwest Connecticut man stabbed to death on a Washington, D.C., subway says his son was a sensitive and caring man determined to make the world a better place.

The Hartford Courant reports (http://cour.at/1HZ4Y6Y ) that more than 225 people joined Douglas Sutherland on Monday in Monroe to remember his son, Kevin Sutherland. He says Kevin Sutherland could "put himself in other people's shoes."

Kevin Sutherland was a graduate of Trumbull High School and a former intern for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut. Himes attended his funeral at St. Jude's Church.

Police say the 24-year-old was robbed and stabbed more than 30 times on a Metro subway car on the Fourth of July.

Police have charged 18-year-old Jasper Spires with murder in the attack.
