Member of medical crew assaulted by teen they were treating

A Prince George's County medical crew member was assaulted Sunday by the teenage patient she was helping to treat.

The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department ambulance received a call for a "sick person" in the 8100 block of 15th Avenue in Langley Park at around 5:30 a.m. Family members let two crew members into the apartment to treat a teenager they thought had "had too much to drink" and required medical assistance.

The team was evaluating the young man when he, without warning, grabbed one of the female crew members and assaulted her with his fist. The crew was able to safely maneuver themselves away from the combative teen and quickly made their way out of the apartment.

Police were dispatched to the scene and restrained the male with handcuffs. A new ambulance, with police on board, later transported him to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The female crew member was shaken, but remained on-duty. It is unclear if any charges will be brought against the teenager.

This assault on Firefighter/Medics and EMTs come on the heels of an incident just over 2 weeks ago where Fire Fighter/Medic Lieutenant John "Skillet" Ulmschneider was shot and killed and another member shot and seriously wounded as they were trying to check on the welfare of the very man that shot them. Two other members were injured while pulling an injured firefighter out of the line of fire.
