Man shot by Fredericksburg police officer dies

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- The Latest on a man shot by a Fredericksburg police officer who was dragged about 600 feet by a fleeing motorist (all times local):

Virginia State Police say the man shot by a Fredericksburg police officer who was dragged about 600 feet by a fleeing motorist has died.

Spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in an email that the man, who was shot Tuesday afternoon, died about 6 p.m. at Mary Washington Hospital. Geller says his body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for autopsy.

Geller says the man will be identified after his relatives are notified.

Earlier, troopers said in a news release that the officer stopped a driver shortly after identifying him as a person wanted on an outstanding warrant.

According to police, the driver stopped but refused to comply with the officer's orders and drove away, dragging the officer. The driver crashed into a ditch and fled on foot, with the officer in pursuit. Police said that "an altercation ensued" and the officer's gun discharged, hitting the suspect in the leg.

The officer was not injured but was checked by medics as a precaution.

Statistics released by the state police show this is the 86th shooting by an officer investigated by the agency since 2010, and the fourth this year.
