Man gets 40 years in prison for Montgomery County home invasion in which GPS tracker was used

ROCKVILLE, Md. - An armed robber who targeted a gambler leaving a casino by using a GPS tracking device was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Thursday.

Kevin Carroll was found guilty after he used the device to follow a man from the Horseshoe Casino to his home in Germantown. Carroll and an accomplice invaded the home and held the victim's children at gunpoint as they stole thousands of dollars, prosecutors said.

"This is every homeowner's worst nightmare. To have criminals track you down from an evening at a casino, wait for you to leave and then invade your home space while your children are home alone," Ramon Korinoff with the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office said. "This is a sophisticated crime, it's a predatory crime, a violent one and one that deserved the sentence that was handed down today."

The mother of the children said in court on Thursday that her daughter still has nightmares about the robbery.

Prosecutors said the key to nabbing Carroll was DNA found on the duct tape he used to tie up the children during the robbery.

Video of Carroll removing the GPS device was captured by a private investigator who was hired by the victim's wife to tail him after suspecting her husband was having an affair. The video of Carroll was shot by the private investigator who was inside the parking garage of the casino and happened to have the camera aimed at the victim's car when Carroll was caught in the act.

Carroll's family spoke during the sentencing on Thursday and asked for leniency and his attorney asked for 12 years. The judge gave Carroll 40 years with the possibility of parole in 20 years.
