Man firing gun on street shot by officer in DC
WASHINGTON - D.C. police said an officer shot a man after he was firing a weapon along a busy street in Northwest D.C.
D.C. Police Assistant Chief Peter Newsham said at around 1:45 p.m., an officer on a mountain bike was alerted to a man firing a handgun in the 3800 block of Georgia Avenue. The officer engaged the suspect and fired his service weapon hitting the suspect. The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.
"We don't have anyone else at this time injured on the scene," said Newsham. "We don't have any officers injured. We don't have any citizens that we know of that have been injured at this time, so it is unclear what exactly he was shooting at, but he was discharging a firearm."
Police said the man was conscious and breathing when he was transported to the hospital where surgery was being performed. His condition is unknown at this time.
According to David DaSilva, a witness at the scene, the suspect was pointing his weapon randomly and did not seem to be aiming at any particular person or place. He said he fired about 10 to 15 rounds.
"Then the police engaged him about over here and told him to 'Drop the weapon, drop the weapon,' and then [the suspect] didn't and then [the officer] opened fire on him," said DaSilva.
