Major delays on I-270 after tractor trailer overturns in crash
URBANA, Md. - A tractor trailer has overturned on Interstate 270 in Frederick County near Urbana after it was involved in a crash with a state highway vehicle and a Maryland State Police cruiser, police say.
The crash, which happened just after 3 p.m. Thursday, caused major delays and backups on the highway during the evening's rush hour.
According to Maryland State Police, a trooper was on the shoulder investigating a previous crash while a state highway CHART truck stopped behind the trooper's vehicle to assist. A tractor trailer drove on the shoulder and struck the CHART truck.
The collision caused the CHART truck to push into the trooper's vehicle and the other vehicle involved in the original crash.
The tractor trailer was carrying bundles of metal pipes, police say.
The trooper and driver of the tractor trailer were both taken to the hospital as a precaution. The trooper has since been released.
All northbound lanes on I-270 at Exit 22 (Old Hundred Rd/MD 109) were shut down and traffic was diverted from the highway to Route 121. The lanes on I-270 reopened just after 9 p.m., officials say.
