Executive Office the DC Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia

The DC Democratic State Committee has appointed Jamal Holtz as interim at-large councilmember to fill the vacancy created by Robert White’s resignation.

The committee acted through its executive committee under emergency authority and called for Holtz's immediate swearing-in.

The party formally notified D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and the District of Columbia Board of Elections of the decision on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Mendelson will administer the oath of office on Monday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.

Party officials noted that the appointment is on a limited basis, with plans to follow a full ad hoc process administered by 13 party members representing all eight wards. Holtz is a fourth-generation Washingtonian who grew up in Ward 8 and lives in Ward 6.

"I did not seek this role, but as a believer in process and in a system where the rules are clear for everyone, I accept my Party's nomination to serve in this role in a temporary capacity," Holtz said.

The DC Democratic Party serves as the elected body representing Democratic voters across the District of Columbia. The party's ad-hoc committee is continuing its selection process for a person to fill the seat until the special election winner is certified.
