Gun found in student's backpack at Wilson High School

WASHINGTON - Woodrow Wilson High School was placed on lockdown Tuesday after a gun was discovered in a student's backpack. No one was injured and the student in possession of the gun was arrested.

According to a statement from the school, the gun was found at around 1:15 p.m.

We are told the student was posting pictures of the gun on social media and was talking about it with other students. He has been charged with gun possession, a felony.

A student reported the gun on campus to a teacher who was able to seize the weapon and alerted a campus security officer as well as police.

"I heard that it was on his Snapchat story and he was showing it to other students," said junior student Sophie Reveal. "One of the students reported it to a teacher and they got him in his math class."

"We go through a lot every morning to make sure that we're safe," said junior student Hannah Wyatt. "We go through metal detectors every morning and scan our bags in the X-ray machines. You would think that they would be able to catch something, so it's a little scary to see it goes unnoticed."

Students were dismissed Tuesday afternoon and greeted with a heavy police presence inside and outside of the school. Some students said they were aware of the incident while others were not. Even so, they said they were rushed and escorted to their classes today during period switches.

Police also said 40 minutes after the gun was found, a fight broke out after dismissal outside of the school. Several students were involved and we are told one person had a knife. Two male juvenile students were arrested in that incident and police are investigating if that fight is connected to the gun found on campus.

Parents received an email from the school's principal, Kimberly Martin, who said all students are safe and there is no immediate threat to the school.

Martin said, "I want to assure you that the safety of all Wilson High School students is one of our top priorities, and we remain committed to ensuring that your students are safe."

D.C. Public Schools told FOX 5 that their metal detectors are working and it will be up to the school to inspect its metal detectors on Wednesday to make sure they are operating correctly.

Nearly 2,000 students are reportedly enrolled at Wilson High School.
