Ex-school volunteer Deonte Carraway writes letter to judge asking for charges to be dropped

WASHINGTON - A former school volunteer who pleaded guilty after admitting to recording students engaging in sex acts inside the Prince George's County elementary school where he volunteered has written a letter to the judge asking for all of his charges to be dropped.

In the letter, Deonte Carraway told Judge Leo Green that he has received inadequate representation from his attorney and claims that he has not heard from his lawyer in over a year.

"I've noticed that my Hicks date has been violated because I have not signed any sort of paper waiving my Hicks date, and, if need be, I wish for a new attorney and that all charges be dropped," Carraway said in part in the letter.

In January, Carraway pleaded guilty in federal court as part of a plea deal where he has agreed to a sentence of at least 60 years in prison.

The statement of facts included in the plea agreement said Carraway recorded children inside the band room and a backroom of Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary School last year on two separate occasions.

The document also said Carraway had sex with and recorded other victims in the bedroom, basement and bathrooms of residences from October 2015 to February 2016.

Prosecutors said Carraway used phone messenger apps Kik and ooVoo to send and receive videos and gave the children cell phones to record themselves.

In a letter dated on June 12 and was stamped received on June 15, Carraway wrote to Judge Green:

Dear Honorable Judge,

I, Deonte Carraway, feel that my lawyer is not representing me in my best interest, I've noticed that my Hicks date has been violated because I have not signed any sort of paper waiving my Hicks date, and, if need be, I wish for a new attorney and that all charges be dropped. The reason for the request for a new attorney is because I have not seen or heard from my lawyer in over a year. The lawyer has not represented me in my best interest. I have sent multiple copies out to my family and other parties of this letter. My family will be reaching out to the media if any concerns are not addressed. This is not to be taken as a threat, it's just I feel with the poor representation and now finding out my right have been violated, I wish only to be treated fair. I will wait for your response. Thank you Judge Leo Green.
