WASHINGTON - All eyes are on a winter storm that is expected to bring a significant amount of snow to much of the Washington, D.C. region.
Heavy snow is possible across the area beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing into Wednesday with accumulations between 4-6" possible by the time the storm ends.
Winter Storm Watches and Warnings for DMV
What we know:
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for much of Northern Virginia, central and southern Maryland and D.C. Northern Maryland, including Baltimore and the West Virginia panhandle. The warning goes into effect for D.C. at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning portions of central, northeast, northern, and southern Maryland, and central and northern Virginia.
Travel Warnings
FOX 5’s Tucker Barnes and Taylor Grenda say plan for slippery road conditions for the Tuesday evening commute and again during the Wednesday morning drive.
The National Weather Service says if possible, drivers should delay all travel while the warnings and watches. are in effect. Any motorists on the roads should drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.
Drivers should leave plenty of room between them and vehicles ahead and allow extra time to reach their destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns.

Snow preps underway across the DMV
Road crews across the D.C. region are preparing for a blast of winter weather that is expected to bring a significant amount of snow Tuesday into Wednesday.
Precautions and Preparations
It's also a good idea to make sure your car is winterized and in good working order. Anyone that must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice accumulations that are possible.
DC snow forecast: Winter Storm Watch in effect Tuesday
Heavy snow is possible across the Washington, D.C. region Tuesday into Wednesday with accumulations between four and six inches possible.
DC Snow Forecast Timeline:
Overall, widespread 4-6" of snow is expected for the in warned areas, with higher totals south of D.C. Lesser totals expected across Northern Maryland.
Monday: Flurries possible before 7am, then becoming mostly cloudy and gradually sunny. High around 44 degrees.
Monday Night: Increasing clouds with a low near 29 degrees.
Tuesday: Snow starting between 12pm - 1pm. High near 35 degrees.
Tuesday Night: Snow continues with a low around 31 degrees.
Wednesday: Snow changing to rain, possibly mixed with snow, before 1 p.m. High near 38 degrees.
