Snow for DC, Maryland, Virginia: How much is expected and when will it arrive?

Another round of winter weather is on the way for the DMV. After a day of mild, sunny weather, a storm system is expected to move in that could drop up to 4"-6" of snow in parts of the region. 

When will the snow arrive?

Monday:

Enjoy the nice weather for tomorrow. We're expecting sunshine and seasonable high temperatures in the 40s. 

Tuesday:

The threat of winter weather returns on Tuesday. The snow starts in far southwest Virginia in the morning and spreads into the DMV in the afternoon.

Wednesday:

The snow will become heavier overnight Wednesday before winding down Wednesday morning. 

Thursday:

Another system is expected to bring an additional wintry mix of rain and freezing rain late Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Both storms are expected to bring minor to moderate icing to the DMV.

The storm would have the potential to produce mainly significant heavy, wet, plowable snow. Some sleet and freezing rain could mix in along the Southern counties where there would be warmer air. 

How much snow could DC, Maryland and Virginia see? 

By the numbers:

Forecast models are indicating 4" to 6" inches of snow. Snowfall rates may reach 1" per hour and will be heavy and wet. Heavier amounts are expected in southern Virginia along with significant icing.

Winter storm warnings are in effect starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday until Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. for Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria, Stafford County, Fairfax County, Warren County, Northern Fauquier County, Anne Arundel County, Central and Southeast Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Northwest Montgomery County, Charles County, District of Columbia, Berkeley County.

Dorchester County is under a winter storm warning from Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. until Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
