DC police make arrest in 2011 murder

WASHINGTON - An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with a D.C. murder that took place during a robbery in October 2011.

The victim, 37-year-old Mohammed Abduselam, was working overtime at his family's gas station on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast D.C. when he was shot and killed after trying to call 911.

Authorities arrested the suspect in Southwest D.C. on Tuesday. He was 14 at the time of the shooting and has been charged as a juvenile.

Police told us tips from the community and DNA evidence led to the arrest.

"The homicide took place in 2011. Since that time, we didn't stop working on the case," said Lt. Sean Conboy of D.C. police. "There was additional information that came from the community and it took some time with DNA, forensic evidence, to put a strong enough case together to be able to charge him."

Abduselam's brother-in-law told FOX 5 the murder weapon was found inside the store three days after the shooting.

The arrest was described to us as a "big deal" for the family.
