City closes road until May so endangered salamanders can cross safely

KITCHENER, Ontario - A city in Canada has closed an entire street - and plans to keep it closed until May - so that salamanders can cross safely.

According to an online report by CBC.ca, salamanders live in forests along Stauffer Drive in the city of Kitchener. Each spring, they cross the road to get to ponds that form from melting snow.

Experts say the slow moving salamanders are protected under Ontario's Endangered Species Act.

The road has been closed many times in the past and will be closed to vehicle traffic until May 1.
