BWI replacing brackets on 6 jet bridges after 6 injured in collapse
HANOVER, Md. (FOX 5) - BWI officials say they are replacing parts to six jet bridges, after several people were injured when a jet bridge collapsed Saturday due to a "partial equipment failure."
BWI officials say they inspected 33 jet bridges with the same manufacturer after the incident, and found they were safe to use.
Investigators say they found that the equipment failed due to a defective metal bracket on the jet bridge that collapsed.
As a precautionary measure, all brackets on five other jet bridges that were installed at the same time as the affected jet bridge will also be replaced.
The six jet bridges will be taken out of service as metal brackets are replaced through Sunday evening, and will be put back into service as they are completed.
Additionally, airport officials said they are continuing inspections for the rest of the airport's jet bridges.
The six people who were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries Saturday night were released early this morning.
