Burned body found nearby Northeast DC alley

Police are investigating a gruesome discovery after a body was found burned in the Trinidad section of Northeast D.C.

The body was found in a trash can of a driveway behind an abandoned house after firefighters responded to a call for a fire at around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Holbrook Terrace.

"It appears to be an adult body," said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. "We can't tell if it's male or female right now. But very quiet in the neighborhood, so we haven't had any issues going on over here. We're really just trying to get the bottom of things right now and talk to the neighbors and see what people know."

Police spent many hours on Tuesday scouring the crime scene while taking photos.

Neighbors say the house has been abandoned for about ten years. The driveway backs up to a curved alley, which is secluded from the street. The driveway is filled with trash with women's shoes and discarded condoms visibly seen. Police familiar with the neighborhood say prostitution is common in this alley.

There are a number of surveillance cameras attached to an apartment building just down the alley.

A week ago, 25-year-old Larry Lockhart was fatally shot in the 1300 block of Orren Street in Northeast D.C., which is located not far away from the abandoned home.
