Arrest made in deadly stabbing of Coolidge High School student

WASHINGTON - D.C. police have arrested an 18-year-old girl for the deadly stabbing of a Coolidge High School student killed after an argument on a Metrobus.

Police announced Kyla Jones has been charged with second-degree murder while armed of 17-year-old Kaelia Minor. Jones turned herself in to homicide detectives Tuesday after learning a warrant was out for her arrest.

According to police, Minor was on her way home when she got involved in a verbal altercation with Jones on the Metrobus Monday night. When they exited the bus at a stop on Kansas Avenue and Emerson Street, the confrontation became physical and Minor was stabbed in the chest. She was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

Police said Minor and Jones knew each other.

Minor was a senior student and the captain of the dance team at Coolidge High School. Docia Proctor told FOX 5 that her daughter was preparing to go to college in Atlanta and had just filled out her financial aid paperwork hours before being killed.

"She was just taken too soon," said Proctor. "She was supposed to take her SAT [exam] Wednesday for college. She was supposed to graduate next year in June. She was supposed to take her school class pictures next month. No parent should have to bury their child. Just tragic for both me and the person who did this [and her family] because it's two losses here. Nobody should have to go through this."

Minor's mother also said she forgives her daughter's killer "because God's got this."

Family, friends and Minor's dance team will gather on Wednesday at the crime scene for a vigil for the late 17-year-old.

"I don't know the motives behind this and I don't know what caused this fight, but I know whatever it was, I know it wasn't important enough for a 17-year-old to be dead and one to have signed her life away," said Mayor Bowser. "So we have to have everybody recognize that a fight that you may have had when you were in school is very different when you're out on the street and you're using a deadly weapon."

Minor's death is the 110th homicide in the city this year.
