4 injured after school bus, police cruiser collide in Fairfax

SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Four people were injured in an accident on Thursday that involved a Fairfax county school bus and a police cruiser in Springfield.

Out of the four people hurt, two were female students, a chaperone and another was the officer.

The students were returning to Mark Twain Middle school when police say the bus driver pulled into the path of the passing cruiser.

According to police, the officer was a female and officers responded to the crash scene at approximately 12:44 p.m. near the intersection of Backlick Road and Floyd Avenue in Springfield.

The officer was responding to a shoplifting call without the lights or siren on when the driver of the bus pulled directly into her path, leaving her car totaled.

During the collision the police cruiser airbags deployed.

A neighbor who witnessed the crash said the officer got out of her car and checked on the students.

"When I turned into the road I saw the officer almost under the bus, right, I saw the bus come across and then I saw the officer go and check on the lady to see if she was okay," the witness explained.

The patients were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

The school bus was transporting students, teachers and chaperons on a field trip, according to officials.
