3 killed in overnight Route 301 crash in Prince George's County

Three people were killed, and another person was injured early Sunday morning in a multi-vehicle crash involving a rideshare vehicle and a hit-and-run driver on Route 301 in Prince George's County.

What we know:

According to Maryland State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. at Route 301 (Crain Highway) and Governors Park Lane in Upper Marlboro.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a black Tesla Model 3 was making a left turn onto Governor’s Park Lane when it failed to yield the right-of-way to a Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling southbound on Route 301. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Tesla. Investigators believe the Tesla was operating as a rideshare service at the time of the collision.

Police also revealed that a third vehicle struck the motorcycle passenger immediately after the initial crash and fled the scene. No description of the fleeing vehicle is currently available.

State police have identified the three victims pronounced dead at the scene:

  • Matthew Eric Vowell, 48, of Friendship, Maryland (operator of the Harley-Davidson)
  • Krystal Ann Vowell, 47, of Friendship, Maryland (passenger on the Harley-Davidson)
  • Adriana Lanae Maxwell, 22, of Glen Burnie, Maryland (rear passenger in the Tesla)

The driver of the Tesla was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration closed the area of the crash for more than four hours to facilitate the investigation and clear debris.
