17-year-old killed in Southeast DC shooting identified

Police have identified the teen who was shot and killed Monday night at a basketball court in Southeast D.C.

Officers say they received a call around 5:22 p.m. for a shooting in the 1800 block of Bruce Place. When they arrived they found 17-year-old James Anthony Smith suffering from gunshot wounds. Smith was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

FOX 5 confirmed that the shooting happened on a basketball court near the Douglass Community Center.

Smith's mother believes the teenager was killed over a new pair of Jordans that were stolen from him, according to a family friend.

Homicide detectives spent much of their time on Monday focusing on the area between parked cars and houses on Bruce Place as well as the basketball courts. The courts sits next to a playground.

Shell casings were found all over the courts and police eventually brought K-9 dogs in to go through the area.

Police tweeted they are on the lookout for a male suspect wearing a red-hooded sweatshirt.
