Storms snap trees on National Mall, floods roadways

WASHINGTON - Heavy storms moved through the D.C. region Tuesday night leaving behind downed trees, downed wires and flooded roadways.

The storms moved in on Tuesday evening and brought with them over 3 inches of rain in just about an hour. Because of the large amount of water on the ground, D.C. was under a Flood Warning until 8 a.m. Wednesday Hail and lightning were also reported in parts of the region.

The heavy winds snapped trees in half along the National Mall and strong winds even brought down light posts in the same area. Damaged utility lines left some homes, businesses and traffic lights without power Wednesday morning.

FOX 5's Mike Thomas says the storms have moved out of our area and a beautiful day is in store. The area should see lots of sunshine with temperatures around 87. A much hotter and more humid weekend in shaping up with temperatures near 100 in certain areas.
