The snow storm has been coming through the area in two parts. Saturday's snow was warm overrunning cold, with light, dry snow. The second came through midday Sunday, bringing heavier, wet snow potential.

Temperatures had begun to drop on Thursday, as strong winter winds held temperatures below 40 degrees for the first time this year, and ended a 28-day streak of above normal temperatures at Reagan National Airport, our longest stretch of "warmth" in winter in over a decade.

As the snow and sleet began on Saturday afternoon, emergency crews asked residents to avoid unnecessary weekend travel. Local governments canceled weekend programs. Several area schools have begun to cancel classes for Monday.

A snow emergency plan was put into effect for Montgomery, Prince George's and Frederick Counties in Maryland. Maryland and Virginia officials prepped for the storm, pre-treating some roads to discourage icing.

"Above all, please put safety first and communicate with your neighbors, family, and friends," said Russ Strickland, executive director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.

A parking ban is imposed on all Maryland State Highway Association state snow emergency routes in Montgomery County.

Sleet and snow have made for treacherous conditions on area roadways. Even SUV drivers have found themselves asking for help from drivers with bigger trucks to get them through icy patches.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Saturday night in order to allow the state to be better prepared to respond to the storm.

Virginia Department of Transportation said roads range from clear to minor condition with patches of snow and ice on the road surface. VDOT crews will continue working overnight. VDOT officials say drivers should stay off roads while crews continue to treat the roadways.
