Washington Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden previews 2017 season

WASHINGTON - Washington Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden spoke on Good Day DC about his team's upcoming season.

Gruden feels they have a strong offensive line, laying a great foundation for quarterback Kirk Cousins. He named tight end Jordan Reed, tackle Trent Williams and guard Brandon Scherff as players to watch.

"Trent Williams is an All-Pro tackle. Brandon Scherff is an All-Pro guard. We have Spencer Long coming back at right guard. Morgan Moses signed a long term deal at right tackle. Our offensive line feels really good now," Gruden explained.

The fourth-year head coach said he is excited about running back Samaje Perine, who the Redskins drafted in the fourth round out of Oklahoma, who will join returning running back Rob Kelley. Gruden noted he is feeling good about the depth of the team.

He said Washington will miss wide receiver Pierre Garcon who was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers, but is confident that Ryan Grant, Jamison Crowder and Terrelle Pryor will serve as effective replacements.

With former offensive coordinator Sean McVay joining the Los Angeles Rams as the youngest head coach in NFL history, Gruden will be play calling once again.

Gruden play called during his first season as Redskins' head coach in 2014 after three successful seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, but passed the role to McVay during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

"I had a lot of influence in the play calling the last three years. It's not like I just stood there with my finger in my ear, " he said. "I'll call plays this year and hopefully it will work out."
