Capitals victory parade planned for Tuesday in DC

Washington Capitals fans have waited 43 seasons for a championship parade, and now they know when they'll get it.

A government source confirms to FOX 5's Matt Ackland that the parade to celebrate Capitals' first Stanley Cup win in franchise history will take place Tuesday, June 12 along Constitution Avenue beginning at 11 a.m.

The parade will start at Constitution Avenue and 17th Streets NW, traveling along Constitution Avenue to 7th Street NW, where it will turn south and end at 7th Street NW and the National Mall, where an #ALLCAPS rally will take place.

The event is free, but fans are encouraged to take Metro or use rideshares as parking is very limited downtown and along the National Mall. Fans are also encouraged to bring plenty of water.

More information is forthcoming about speakers and a schedule of events.

FOX 5's Matt Ackland has been told there was a little back and forth during discussion on where the parade was going to take place. The District wanted to have it on Pennsylvania Avenue and then end up in Freedom Plaza. However, the Capitals wanted to have it on the National Mall.

Fans are invited to come out and celebrate the team's incredible season, after their Game 5 victory over the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night to wrap up the Stanley Cup Finals-- and based on the outpouring of excitement during their entire playoff run, it's safe to assume Caps fans both old and new will be out in force.

"It was amazing," said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. "We had a full stadium, the streets were full, people were watching. So it just tells you the excitement that is in D.C. We are a real sports town. For a long time, people didn't take us seriously. I have been telling you for three years it's the sports capital and now we are a championship city too."

According to the permit submitted to the National Park Service by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Capitals, over 100,000 people are expected to attend.

Thousands of fans rocked the red and packed downtown D.C.-- not to mention a capacity crowd inside Capital One Arena-- to watch Thursday night's historic game, and be part of the celebration that followed.

The Capitals have been waiting for a chance to bring home the Stanley Cup since 1974 and they arrived home -- Stanley Cup in hand -- on Friday afternoon!

You can watch live coverage of their arrival on FOX 5 DC, as well as our website, Facebook and Twitter.
