Bryce Harper Field dedicated at Takoma Community Center northwest DC
WASHINGTON - There's a new place for kids to play baseball in D.C., and it bears the name of one of the Washington Nationals' most popular players.
Bryce Harper Field was officially dedicated Saturday morning before a packed crowd at the Takoma Community Center in northwest D.C. It was made possible through public and private contributions from Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, in partnership with the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.
The new field will welcome both 40/60 and 50/70 styles of youth baseball, hosting Senators Satchel Paige Little League games, among other youth baseball leagues. It was constructed in just three short weeks.
Mayor Muriel Bowser was on hand to help dedicate the field Saturday. She thanked Harper for his contribution to the community.
Harper urged young people to embrace all sports, including baseball.
"I want to leave the game of baseball in a better place than when I entered it as a kid and a pro, but it is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this project," Harper said.
Bryce Harper Field is the Nationals Dream Foundation's third Legacy Field. Through the program, the Nationals Dream Foundation renovates one youth baseball or softball field in the District each year. Ryan Zimmerman Field and Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez field were also built through the same initiative.
